7 Things that can kill your MOJO

Working in an environment that is motivational is key to your startup's success.

Creating an environment that's motivational isn't difficult; inspirational posters and affirmative quotes act as a visual source of motivation to wandering eyes. But don't forget that motivation has it's enemies and as well as furnishing your workspace with sources of inspiration, you need to beware of the following...

1. Envy

Envy can sometimes be moderately positive, and act as a source of inspiration to achieve what you see as other people's success. In the Startup world however, envy is a surefire was to kill your motivation. Your focus needs to be on how to achieve your goals, not wasting emotion on resentment – as a Startup you don't have the time or energy for that.

2. Impatience

"Rome wasn't built in a day"*. I know this a time repeated adage but it really wasn't. You need to be patient and remember success is the culmination of hard work and time.

3. Being Overwhelmed

It can be very easy to get overwhelmed as a Startup – often you have taken a huge gamble to begin this journey and when everything doesn't go to plan (which at various points it inevitably won't) you need to be able to step back and look at the bigger picture.

4. Loss of Meaning

Remembering why your putting in all those insociable hours, investing money, getting into debt and all the other unsavoury aspects of the Startup lifestyle. There are times when this will be the only thing that will keep you going. You are doing this because you believe in your goals and feel that they can make a difference – and if you don't have complete faith in your product you're in the wrong business.

5. A sense of urgency

This may seem contradictory to number 2 but really they are separate entities. Things aren't going to happen overnight, but you still need to jump at every opportunity thrown at you in your Startup journey.

6. Poor Health

Before your business can be healthy, you need to be healthy! The Startup world requires you to give 110% and if your immune system is going to kick off at every raincloud you won't be able to give that.

7. Ingratitude

Finally remember you are in a completely privileged position – you are persuing your dream. Yes the bills may be high, yes you may be on your 3rd Mortage but you are now your own boss. You are creating and building something you believe in, hold on to this and it's possibly the greatest motivation you could ask for.

*It's worth noting that Roman architects had a significant advantage over their counterparts in that it was furnished with some pretty spectacular Motivational Posters from Startupzap.
